A group of 14 students from The King’s School Ely are preparing for a memorable day on Friday (27 November) when they will be admitted as King’s or Queen’s Scholars and presented with distinctive scarlet scholars’ gowns during a service in Ely Cathedral.
The scholars are nominated for their academic achievement and become members of the Cathedral Foundation and also qualify for other privileges during their sixth form years.
King’s is one of the oldest schools in the UK, tracing its history back over 1,000 years and was granted its first royal charter in 1541 by King Henry VIII. At the same time he established King’s Scholars.
In 1970, the school admitted girls for the first time, and three years later the boy King’s Scholars were joined by Queen’s Scholars (girls) at the request of Queen Elizabeth 11 when she toured the school during a visit to Ely.
The new Scholars are Charlotte Bain, Jessica Bartlett, Jennifer Clark, Jonathan East, Martha Eddy, Alex Garner, Alexandra Hill, Charlie Kenzie, Rowan McConkey, Jonathan Moore, Oliver Moses, Rebecca Phillips, Bruno Russell and Rosie White.
